Printer Solution| All Benefits You can Get from CR-10 V2 Titan Direct Extruder

FDM-based 3D printers use either direct extruder or Bowden extruder, both of which are used to push filament through a heated nozzle. They are broadly similar and also slightly different. The latest CREALITY CR-10 V2 is equipped with a default Bowden extruder, and can be DIY upgraded to Titan direct extruder.
In this article, we will focus on analyzing Titan direct extruder to help you make a decision whether you will add a Titan direct extruder to your shopping cart or not.
Brief on Direct Extruder

The direct extruder is right above the hotend with little space in between, which enables the extruder to push the filament directly into the nozzle. Since it minimizes the distance for filament traveling to the hotend, the direct extruder is more helpful and reliable when producing 3D prints with flexible soft filaments like TPU and ABS. Furthermore, the biggest benefit for using direct extruder is easier filament retraction thus avoiding filament stringing and oozing during printing.
One major disadvantage of having the direct extruder so close to the hotend is adding more weight to the print head. It shall contribute to problems when printing quickly, like ripples on the final prints, for there might be overshooting and lurch caused by the print head when it changes direction.

1. More reliable extrusion. As mentioned above, the direct extruder effectively shortens the traveling distance for filament to go through the nozzle, which is quite helpful for reliable extrusion.
2. Quicker retraction. Retraction is a process of pulling the filament backward away from the nozzle which happens when the hotend is moving across an open space so that the melting filament won't ooze.
3. Less motor drive. The shorten distance not only guarantees reliable extrusion but also requires less strength to push filament.
4. More supportable materials. With a direct extruder, users will enjoy impressive printing experience even with flexible and abrasively soft filaments.
